Genesis, a resilient young woman who has faced numerous challenges since childhood, continues to inspire with her determination and accomplishments. Raised in a single-mother household with limited income, she endured not only financial hardship but also the trauma of physical abuse. However, her story took a turn for the better when she found refuge and support at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles (BGCMLA) in the Watts/Willowbrook community.
Through BGCMLA, Genesis found opportunities to enrich her education, advocate for herself and her community, and contribute positively to society. Engaging in programs like College Bound, Power Hour, Keystone, and the Social Justice Club, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery and activism. Genesis became a vocal advocate for environmental justice, using platforms like podcasts and surveys to raise awareness and effect change.
Genesis shares: “I am so proud of the fact that despite the community I am from, being surrounded by people with no ambition, and almost losing hope for myself, I was still able to accomplish one of my greatest goals that will ultimately guide me into my future. It has made me optimistic; I know that I can be 'the rose that grows from concrete,' as the poem from Tupac Shakur states. While concrete is neither a natural nor a healthy environment for any rose to grow in, it was still able to become beautiful and strong. I can also grow out of the circumstance I was raised in and become someone who works for the betterment of society and fights against injustice.”
Her dedication and passion caught the attention of political leaders, including Congresswoman Nanette Barragan and Senator Alex Padilla, further validating the impact of her work. Genesis's commitment to advocacy led her to pursue an internship with BGCMLA partner Foley & Lardner, solidifying her aspiration to become a lawyer and continue fighting for social justice issues.
Despite facing significant obstacles, Genesis's hard work and perseverance paid off when she was accepted into the University of Southern California (USC) as part of the top 6% of applicants. Making history as the first student from her school to receive early admission to USC in decades, Genesis's achievement is a testament to her resilience and the support she received from BGCMLA.
Looking ahead, Genesis remains determined to make a difference in her community. Her passion for advocacy and sexual reproductive health has inspired her to pursue the creation of a nonprofit organization to provide essential services to underserved youth and females. She recognizes the disparity within education and healthcare systems and is committed to addressing these issues in her future endeavors.
Genesis's story serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, highlighting the transformative impact of organizations like BGCMLA on the lives of youth and teens in Los Angeles. Her journey is a testament to the power of determination, support, and advocacy in overcoming adversity and striving for a better future. As she continues to pursue her dreams, Genesis embodies the spirit of resilience and possibility, proving that with determination and support, anything is achievable.
